President Donald Trump announced a proposed $100 million investment in pharmaceutical manufacturing in Kentucky. This announcement came with a condition: the investment hinges on Republican victories in the upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking at a rally in Highland Heights on the Northern Kentucky University campus, Trump stated, “If the Republicans win, the Department of War will be investing $100 million in the pharmaceutical company Antheia to revitalize a gigantic drug manufacturing facility in Winchester, Kentucky.” Attendees included Kentucky Republicans such as Senate candidate Andy Barr and 4th Congressional District candidate Ed Gallrein.
Trump’s statement linked this investment directly to the election results. Specifics regarding the investment’s structure, timing, and the Winchester facility’s status remain unclear. Newsweek has reached out to Antheia for further details.
Antheia’s Role
Antheia, a pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturer from California, focuses on key starting materials (KSMs) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) essential for medicines. The company aims to reduce dependence on agriculture, vulnerable to disruptions. Their first product, thebaine, is used for pain medication and addiction treatment. The company plans its commercial delivery in 2024, also working on other ingredients like oripavine and scopolamine.
The announcement aligns with federal efforts to boost domestic production of crucial pharmaceutical ingredients. In March, the Department of Health and Human Services awarded Antheia $9 million to expand thebaine production. This follows previous government-funded agreements worth up to $12 million. The proposed $100 million investment exceeds these commitments, but details about its execution remain undisclosed.
Trump Discusses Iran and Protesters
Besides the investment, Trump addressed issues like the conflict with Iran. He stated optimism, saying, “It’s going to end very quickly.” He referred to U.S. actions in Iran as “excursions,” claiming, “When I did the little excursion to the beautiful Islamic Republic of Iran, we beat them significantly.”
The rally faced interruptions by protesters, which Trump alleged were paid participants. One protester was removed by security, with Trump humorously debating whether the person should face legal action. Another person in the arena prompted Trump to inquire whether they were a “friend or foe.”
During his speech, Trump touched on Venezuela, asserting the financial benefits from operations there. He claimed, “You know how much money we’re taking out of Venezuela? Hundreds of billions of dollars.”
Competitive Races in Kentucky
The rally occurred as Kentucky prepares to elect a successor to long-serving Republican Senator Mitch McConnell. Andy Barr is up against Democrat Charles Booker for this Senate seat. Limited polling shows Barr leading, according to a survey conducted in August.
A tight race is underway in Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. Republican Ralph Alvarado faces Democrat Zach Dembo. Polls suggest Dembo leading by nine percentage points, with a notable number undecided voters. In the 4th Congressional District, Republican Ed Gallrein competes against Democrat Melissa Strange.
