Janice Nix Sentenced for Manslaughter of Stepdaughter in 1978

A South London woman received a 12-year prison sentence after being found guilty of manslaughter for the death of her 5-year-old stepdaughter, Andrea Bernard, in 1978. Janice Nix, 67, previously a drug kingpin turned probation officer, was convicted in May based on key testimony from Andrea’s brother, Desmond Bernard.

Desmond Bernard, who was 8 at the time of the incident, provided vital evidence at Ms. Nix’s sentencing hearing. He revealed that he had concealed the truth about his sister’s death for nearly 50 years. ‘The last memory I have of my sister’s life are my sister’s piercing screams and lying about her death,’ he stated.

Initially ruled an accident, Andrea’s death was attributed to sepsis from extensive burns in a coroner’s report. However, prosecutors stated that Ms. Nix forced Andrea into a scalding-hot bath as punishment. This incident was part of a pattern of abuse where Ms. Nix reportedly beat the children with belts, burned them with cigarettes, and bit them.

On June 6, 1978, Andrea was already facing punishment from Ms. Nix, according to Mr. Bernard. Ms. Nix had ordered Andrea to skip school to assist with cleaning their home in Thornton Heath, South London. Andrea fled, fearing another beating, as described by prosecutors.
