JD Vance Cites Bernie Sanders in Immigration Debate

Vice President JD Vance highlighted Senator Bernie Sanders’ past criticism of open borders to support the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown. This unlikely alignment between two ideologically opposed figures surfaced as the administration moved to suspend several companies from key employment-based immigration programs.

Vance addressed this issue during a press conference announcing actions against firms accused of misusing employment visa programs. He suggested that some modern socialists have deviated from a worker-first stance. Vance recalled a 2016 instance when Sanders, a leading socialist, opposed open borders, arguing they could harm American workers. Sanders’ comments echoed those of Stephen Miller, a key Trump advisor, emphasizing the need to protect domestic labor.

Vance used these points to defend the administration’s decision to suspend companies like Microsoft and Adobe from the Labor Department’s PERM program. This program sponsors foreign workers for permanent residency. An investigation revealed that Microsoft laid off about 6,000 American workers while hiring around 6,300 non-citizens via H-1B visas. Officials accused some companies of replacing domestic workers with cheaper foreign labor.

Vance argued that Sanders’ previous stance showed concern over the impact of immigration on labor-market competition. He contrasted Sanders’ earlier views with what he described as the current socialist candidates’ approaches. Vance noted that socialism traditionally prioritizes workers’ interests, a principle he associates with Sanders’ former position on immigration.

Sanders, known for his progressive politics, often supports immigration reform without endorsing open borders. He advocates for secure borders while proposing legal status pathways for undocumented immigrants. Sanders also promotes enhanced technology and personnel at the border but opposes large-scale wall construction as the primary solution.
