Jewel, the renowned singer and songwriter, once faced homelessness and significant mental health challenges before rising to success. During a conversation on the ‘No Magic Pill’ podcast, she shared the impactful traumas from her childhood. At eight years old, she experienced her mother leaving the family. Her father, dealing with his own hardships, became physically abusive when they returned to his hometown. This marked a turning point in Jewel’s life.

Jewel’s early years in Alaska, living off-grid without electricity or running water, played a pivotal role in shaping her resilience. Reflecting on her teenage years spent struggling with homelessness, Jewel made a firm decision early on to avoid drugs and alcohol. She had witnessed the negative effects firsthand and instinctively understood the danger it posed.

By age 15, Jewel was living independently. She relocated to San Diego to care for her sick mother, yet found herself living in her car as paychecks fell through and expenses increased. During this period, Jewel’s mental health began to deteriorate, manifesting in worsening panic attacks and agoraphobia. Lacking basic necessities like food and water, Jewel faced dire circumstances.

The musician began playing music in her youth, following the footsteps of her family. However, during her lowest point, she resorted to shoplifting to survive. Jewel recounted stealing food and herbs due to her health issues but soon found herself stealing items she did not need. She described this compulsive behavior as an addiction, one she struggled to control.

Blake Mycoskie, the podcast host, referenced Jewel’s memoir, ‘Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story,’ noting her realization that shoplifting stemmed from fears of inadequacy. Jewel’s compulsive stealing habit led to an epiphany one day in a changing room as she attempted to stash a stolen dress. Looking at her reflection, she recognized the risk of becoming another statistic.

Empowered by the idea that happiness is rooted not in possessions but in thoughts, Jewel resolved to change her mindset and behaviors. One unique approach she adopted was journaling every action performed with her hands for two weeks. This practice helped her achieve radical presence, alleviating her anxiety. By focusing on the present moment, Jewel let go of worries about a future yet to unfold.

Jewel highlighted that fear acts as a thief, stealing the chance to transform one’s life. She embraced the realization that healing and growth come from confronting and reimagining one’s past. Through her personal journey, Jewel demonstrates how mindset change and self-awareness pave the way to success.
