Joy Reid Discusses True Independence Day for Black Americans

Joy Reid, a prominent journalist, recently addressed the topic of which day should truly signify American freedom. In a conversation with MS NOW analyst Alex Wagner on her YouTube show, Reid expressed that Juneteenth, not July 4th, should be celebrated as the true day of independence for Black Americans. She mentioned that while her White friends celebrate Independence Day with enthusiasm, she perceives a different sentiment among Black individuals. Many, she claims, enjoy the holiday as a day off but do not feel the patriotic connection to July 4th.

Reid cited Frederick Douglass, explaining that July 4th historically marks a celebration for those who freed themselves from British rule, yet continued to uphold slavery. She pointed out the complex feelings that many Black individuals have towards this holiday, pointing to America’s history of slavery and the ongoing struggle for civil rights.

Reid drew a parallel between Black people’s view of July 4th and Indigenous peoples’ perspectives on Thanksgiving, explaining that both groups have mixed feelings due to historical injustices. She argued that Juneteenth serves as a more genuine representation of American freedom, aligning with the end of slavery and the subsequent constitutional amendments ensuring rights for Black individuals.

Reid also referenced historical figures like President Abraham Lincoln, highlighting his willingness to tolerate slavery if it meant preserving the union, despite personally disliking it. She discussed how Lincoln’s views at the time reflected broader societal attitudes, including ideas about relocating Black people to Africa.

Wagner listened and agreed with Reid’s assessment of Juneteenth being a more accurate reflection of what patriotism should represent today. The discussion also touched on modern political figures, with Reid asserting that President Donald Trump symbolizes historical American values, while former President Barack Obama illustrates a progressive vision for the country.
