Over 180 Jewish entertainers and artists have come forward to support actor Mark Ruffalo, who faces accusations of antisemitism. These accusations arose from his stance against the Warner Bros. Discovery-Paramount merger.
The artists include well-known names like Abbi Jacobson and Joel Coen. They have signed a letter asserting their support for Ruffalo. The letter, featured in Variety, declares a strong message against what they describe as a smear campaign targeting Ruffalo. They argue that highlighting connections between issues in Palestine and domestic liberties is not antisemitic.
Enough with the false and dangerous weaponization of charges of antisemitism against those who are brave enough to point out the obvious.
The controversy stems from Ruffalo sharing a video of Oracle executive Safra Catz discussing technology used in Israel post the Hamas attacks on October 7. In his comments, Ruffalo suggested that the merger could lead to a media conglomerate pushing oppression.
Jewish artists assert that executives linked to Oracle have publicly shown support for actions against Palestinians. The letter accuses Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison of planning to control media consumption.
Many Hollywood figures have rallied in Ruffalo’s defense. They argue that most American Jews perceive Israel’s actions against Gaza as war crimes or genocide. They believe that connecting events in Gaza and Hollywood fulfills a Jewish ethical duty.
Ruffalo’s representation has not commented. However, Ruffalo previously rejected antisemitism claims, stating that criticizing Israeli policy or military contracts is distinct from attacking Jewish people.
The actor’s stance has drawn criticism. An industry group, The Brigade, condemned the actor, accusing him of equating Jewish executives with a powerful elite.
Elizabeth Barcohana, from the California Republican Party, criticized Ruffalo’s role in the merger opposition. She praised The Brigade for challenging what she sees as antisemitism in the industry.
