Joey Chestnut: The Legend of Hot Dog Eating Contests

Joey Chestnut has become synonymous with the Fourth of July. On America’s 250th birthday, he aims to dominate the hot dog eating contest once again, continuing his streak of championships. While eating one hot dog for each year of America’s existence might be ambitious, Chestnut is expected to secure his 18th title.

His journey to greatness began in 2007 when he ended Takeru Kobayashi’s six consecutive wins. Despite Kobayashi’s jaw injury, Chestnut emerged victorious, eating 66 hot dogs compared to Kobayashi’s 63. This marked the beginning of a legendary rivalry. Chestnut narrowly defeated Kobayashi over the next two years, including a tie-breaking eat-off in 2008. Once Kobayashi was banned in 2010, Chestnut dominated the contest.

From 2007 to 2014, Chestnut claimed each title until Matt Stonie upset him in 2015, winning 62-60. Stonie’s victory was brief, as Chestnut captured the next eight titles. In 2024, Chestnut was barred due to a sponsorship conflict but returned in 2025 to reclaim the title with 70.5 hot dogs and buns.

Despite contract disputes and a temporary ban, Chestnut expressed his joy in returning to the contest. He shared with Fox News Digital, “It’s electric to be back; I love what I do, eat, travel, and meet happy people,” illustrating his passion for competitive eating.

His journey has not been without challenges. In 2022, a protester interrupted his performance, but Chestnut resumed, managing to eat 63 hot dogs. His participation in 2026 seemed uncertain due to a battery charge, but he was allowed to compete after pleading guilty and receiving probation.

Chestnut’s record is 76 hot dogs, set in 2021, surpassing his own previous records each year. However, he views the event as more than an eating contest. “It’s about the Fourth of July celebration in New York City,” he shared with Fox News. “I’m glad to be part of people’s Fourth of July, a significant celebration.”

Joey Chestnut’s endurance and triumph in the hot dog eating contests have made him a key figure in Fourth of July celebrations. His dedication to his craft and to the spirit of the event continues to captivate audiences year after year.
