Des Bishop’s Comedy Journey: From Queens to Global Stages

New York City native Des Bishop has carved a unique path in the world of comedy. His career journey led him from Queens to Ireland and even to China. After returning to the U.S., Bishop found that touring the States elevated his comedic skills.

At age 14, Bishop moved to Ireland, only returning to the U.S. in his mid-40s during the COVID-19 pandemic. He performed in various languages and styles before debuting his Hulu special, “Bridge and Tunnel,” set to release for free on YouTube on July 10. This is his seventh stand-up special and only the second in America.

Bishop’s unique experience in Ireland shaped his comedy style. “In Ireland, strong storytelling comedians are the norm,” he explained. Performing in America required him to develop a faster, punchier delivery. “Touring in the U.S. made me a better comedian,” he said.

“Gigging in America… just made me a way better comedian,” Bishop stated.

His experiences abroad, like learning Mandarin to perform in China, enriched his comedy. He noted that cultural differences in humor style didn’t hinder him. Bishop found audiences appreciated his energetic approach despite the contrast with Chinese stand-up.

Bishop’s perspective shifted upon embracing his Queens roots. “I’ve always been the American in Ireland,” he shared. Accepting his background opened new comedic material, capturing nostalgic themes appreciated by Gen X audiences.

His special “Bridge and Tunnel” delves into Gen X nostalgia, a theme that resonates with fans. Bishop knows younger viewers might not relate, but believes in the strength of nostalgic content. “One day you’ll be nostalgic about TikTok,” he remarked.

Two Eras of Comedy

Bishop finds balance with his wife, comedian Hannah Berner, who brings her own comedic style to the table. Berner recently released her second special, “None of My Business,” on Hulu. Together, they navigate their careers with mutual respect, acting as sounding boards for each other’s creative work.

“We understand how much it matters to each other,” Bishop noted.

The couple’s dynamic blends traditional and modern comedic approaches. Berner supports Bishop’s social media endeavors, ensuring his content reaches a broader audience. “Her keen eye for virality has benefited my online presence,” Bishop said.

Reflecting on his journey, Bishop acknowledges the lessons learned. “Remember those things that I thought were the end of my universe? It just went away,” he observed.
