Two people were killed and a third was injured after a shooting occurred at a shopping mall in Dearborn, Michigan, on Friday afternoon. The incident caused panic among shoppers preparing for the Fourth of July holiday.
Incident Details
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin stated that the shooting at Fairlane Town Center began with a confrontation between two groups who knew each other. The dispute escalated into gunfire. According to The Associated Press, police indicated that members of both groups had handguns, and the incident was not considered random.
The shooting happened at approximately 1:25 p.m. local time, as reported by CBS News Detroit. One victim died inside the mall, while another victim succumbed to injuries later at a hospital. A third individual, also injured, received treatment at a hospital. The victims were described as young men in their late teens or early 20s.
Panic and Evacuation
The gunfire led to fear and evacuation of the mall as police responded. A video on social media showed people fleeing the shopping center after shots were fired. Outside the mall, a person running from the scene was hit by a vehicle, according to CBS.
Several individuals believed to be involved in the altercation were questioned by police. No immediate arrests were made. Chief Shahin reported no known motive or evidence suggesting the shooting was connected to a robbery. Authorities assured there was no further threat to the public.
Ongoing Investigation
Michigan State Police collaborated with Dearborn authorities in the investigation, which required the mall to be closed. Chief Shahin expressed outrage over the incident, highlighting the unacceptable nature of violence in a public space, according to CBS News Detroit.
Fairlane Town Center is located near Michigan Avenue and Evergreen Road and boasts over 125 stores and restaurants. Dearborn, a Detroit suburb, has a population of over 100,000 and is situated about 9 miles west of the city.
