John James Wins Republican Gubernatorial Primary in Michigan

U.S. Representative John James, endorsed by former President Trump, is expected to triumph in Michigan’s Republican gubernatorial primary. As reported by CBS News, as of 10:47 p.m., James led with 155,109 votes compared to Perry Johnson, a businessman with 111,942 votes.

The Candidates

John James, a former U.S. Army aviation officer and logistics executive, declared his gubernatorial run in April 2025. He previously faced defeats in U.S. Senate races against Debbie Stabenow in 2018 and Gary Peters in 2020. However, he overcame Democrat Carl Marlinga in both the 2022 and 2024 elections. James’ move for governor leaves his 10th Congressional seat available. Endorsements from President Trump and former rival Aric Nesbitt bolstered his campaign.

In contrast, Johnson’s career centers on the American auto industry. He entered the gubernatorial race in January 2026, following disqualification in 2022 due to invalid petition signatures. An unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2024 marked his past endeavors. Johnson promotes enhancing state government efficiency, referencing his auto industry background. He advocates eliminating state income tax to increase the typical family’s income by approximately $4,747 annually.

Key Issues

During his tenure in Congress, James emphasized national security and energy independence. Recently, he responded to Canadian wildfire smoke affecting Michigan by urging Canadian intervention. If elected governor, James aims to protect Michigan’s natural resources against extreme weather conditions.

Johnson seeks to eliminate Michigan’s state income tax and implement government audits, focusing on financial efficiency. His reforms also address property taxation. Although self-funding his campaign, Johnson remains attuned to economic hardships from his past experiences.

Both candidates present distinct strategies to address Michigan’s future challenges, focusing on economic and environmental stewardship.
