Apart from Michigan, Kansas, Missouri, Virginia, and Washington held primaries with notable outcomes. In Missouri, Representative Wesley Bell triumphed over former Representative Cori Bush, a democratic socialist, in a move seen as the establishment pushing back on progressive candidates. Similarly, in Lansing, Michigan, progressives celebrated a victory with William Lawrence defeating two centrist Democrats in a House primary, a race that will test the viability of left-wing populism.
Dr. El-Sayed champions universal healthcare and criticizes U.S. military aid to Israel, earning support from progressive leaders. Meanwhile, Haley Stevens is endorsed by state and national party leaders, positioning herself as a bipartisan ally of Israel.
About $60 million of outside funding, largely from AIPAC, supports Stevens while critiquing El-Sayed. As the vote count progresses, Dr. El-Sayed’s initial lead narrows, with about half of the votes counted. Detroit’s latest batch of Election Day votes has significantly favored him.
Key matchups elsewhere include former Representative Elaine Luria facing Republican Jen Kiggans in a competitive Virginia House race. In Kansas, Cindy Holscher and Ty Masterson will vie for governorship as Democrats aim to succeed Laura Kelly.
Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez advances in Washington’s general election, overcoming challenges from both political sides. In a Detroit race, voters will decide between Representative Shri Thanedar and Donavan McKinney.
The Michigan Senate race remains tightly contested, with El-Sayed leading by 2.5 points. Both candidates await further results from their strongest counties.
