Michael P. Desronvil, the only holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, firmly believed in his decision. His attorney, Edward Paltzik, conveyed to Fox News that any claims suggesting his client was uncertain are incorrect. ‘Michael had zero doubt. No doubt,’ Paltzik stated. He emphasized the strength of the evidence, describing it as abundant.
Lindsay Clancy confessed to the murder of her three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan—in January 2023. Charged with three counts of first-degree murder, her defense hinged on a plea of postpartum psychosis, which they argued exempted her from criminal responsibility.
Despite over five weeks of testimony and seven days of jury deliberations, unanimity was not reached, leading Judge William Sullivan to declare a mistrial. The case has fueled a national dialogue on postpartum psychosis, women’s mental health, and the justice system’s treatment of defendants with mental illness.
Michael Desronvil: The Lone Juror
Michael Desronvil, 48, from Massachusetts, stood out as the single juror dissenting in Clancy’s trial. After the mistrial, he faced criticism from some of his peers. Fellow jurors publicly questioned his willingness to engage with opposing views during deliberations. Jury foreperson Roni Carlson disclosed to NBC10 Boston that Desronvil acknowledged reasonable doubt at one point but still resisted declaring Clancy not criminally responsible.
Another juror, Paula Devlin, characterized Desronvil as unyielding, describing efforts to address his doubts by revisiting medical and toxicology evidence. Desronvil, however, clarified through a statement to Newsweek that his comments were misconstrued, with his attempts to discuss hypotheses being misunderstood as doubt.
The public has focused intensely on Desronvil due to his role in this high-profile case. His attorney asserted that Desronvil is currently protected at a secure, undisclosed location in northern New England.
Following the trial, a crowdfunding effort for Desronvil garnered over $350,000. Court documents revealed a past legal issue for Desronvil. In September 2021, he faced an assault charge, which was dropped later that year.
The Future of Lindsay Clancy’s Case
With the mistrial declared, Clancy’s legal battle is ongoing as charges remain pending. The upcoming status hearing is scheduled for September 29 in Plymouth Superior Court with Judge Sullivan presiding. Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, has requested a judgment of not guilty and intends to challenge the possibility of another trial on double-jeopardy grounds.
Clancy continues to be held in custody, receiving psychiatric care at Tewksbury State Hospital, Massachusetts. For anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts, support is available through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741.
