Justice Barrett Criticized by Right for Recent Votes

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett recently became a target of criticism from right-wing figures after siding with liberal justices on key cases. This included decisions to uphold birthright citizenship and maintain mail-in voting practices, opposing efforts by the Trump administration.

Earlier this week, Justice Barrett joined Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and the court’s liberal minority to block a push to limit mail-in voting. Trump attributed his 2020 defeat to mail-in ballots, although he provided no evidence to support this claim.

Within the Republican Party, officials and commentators saw Barrett’s votes as a departure from Trump’s agenda. She was previously noted for often siding with the majority in decisions that leaned liberal, according to an analysis prepared for The New York Times, although her decisions in the current term have been different. She also voted against Trump’s tariffs previously.

Some voices on the right expressed strong disapproval. Matt Walsh, a right-wing commentator, criticized Barrett on social media, drawing comparisons to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. Representative Nancy Mace from South Carolina even suggested that Barrett should be removed from the Supreme Court.

Removing a Supreme Court justice involves the congressional impeachment process. This requires a majority vote in the House and a two-thirds majority in the Senate. Currently, Republicans do not possess the necessary votes in the Senate to convict.
