Justin Langford’s Determination Shines in Football Comeback

Lincoln Way Central’s Justin Langford faced a significant decision following a torn right labrum during the wrestling season. The injury, which he sustained at a winter tournament, initially went unnoticed by him. ‘I didn’t know it was torn until the regionals,’ Langford explained. ‘I couldn’t really use it, so I went to the doctor and found out it was torn.’

Langford’s passion and future lie in football. Surgery would have sidelined him from his senior season, so he chose physical therapy, a decision that paid off in the fall. The Knights faced a strong Lincoln-Way East team, losing 42-0 in a SouthWest Suburban Conference match. Yet, Langford made an impact by recovering a muffed punt, generating excitement among the home crowd. ‘That was fun,’ Langford remarked. ‘I thought it was going to be a turning point for us in the game. But that didn’t happen.’

Despite the tough game, Langford’s shoulder has been stable, allowing him to proceed with plans like a recruitment visit to Central Michigan and a previous visit to Valparaiso. ‘I went through PT and used some tape,’ Langford shared about his recovery. ‘I have a brace, and it feels brand new. I feel as good as new. Missing the state wrestling was hard, but I’m happy to be back.’

Recovering and returning to football was challenging. ‘It was a little rough,’ Langford admitted. ‘I had PT for strength and one for inner muscles. I was going twice a day, then came to football to lift and do everything I could to get back out here.’

In his six games back, Langford recorded 28 tackles, with 13 solo stops, a sack, an interception, and led the team with four tackles for losses. Coach David Woodburn praised Langford’s contribution. He said, ‘He was a good player last year, but he has really come into himself this year. He’s a leader and probably one of the fastest on the defensive side of the ball and maybe even on the team in general.’

Langford’s ability to play multiple positions, including occasional tight end, adds to his value. Woodburn noted, ‘He makes play after play on defense.’ Langford remains committed to football, stating, ‘I live for football — I love football. I love higher-level football and want to do anything to get my face out there.’

The Knights faced setbacks in close games, adding context to their recent blowout loss. Nonetheless, Langford remains thrilled to compete. ‘I love the brotherhood I get with my teammates,’ he shared. ‘Win or lose, it’s great to be a part of something like this.’
