Karl Bushby Completes Epic 28-Year Journey Home to England

Karl Bushby’s Return to Hull

Karl Bushby arrived home in Hull, England, after a staggering 28-year trek. His journey, started at age 29, took him across continents with two self-imposed rules: no mechanical aid and no return home throughout.

Challenges Along the Way

Bushby faced multiple challenges, including illness, visa issues in Russia, and the invasion of Ukraine. His safety was threatened by armed gangs in the Darien Gap, a polar bear in Siberia, and imprisonment in Panama. He traversed long distances, including swimming parts of the Caspian Sea and crossing the Bering Sea.

Final Steps and Reception

On Monday, Bushby took his last steps amid applause in Hull, a city about 150 miles from London. He expressed gratitude to those who supported him, stating, “It took a world, global effort” to get him back. The adventurer began his “Goliath Expedition” in Chile on Nov. 1, 1998, marking his journey as the first recorded attempt from South America to England.

Challenges of Returning Home

Upon returning, Bushby felt disoriented, as if entering a foreign country. For years, he had worked with foreign currencies and found himself unfamiliar with local brands and driving rules. He expressed a sense of guilt and the oddness of readjusting to life in the UK, noting, “There are other parts of the world now that feel more like home to me.”

Reflection on the World Today

Reflecting on global changes, Bushby remained optimistic about humanity. Despite ongoing conflicts, he believed society can overcome its current challenges. His advice to others was to “dream bigger” and to recognize their potential, stating, “You’re more capable than you think you are.”

At the finish, Bushby embraced his mother, Angela, and began processing the end of a journey that spanned over two decades.
