Kawhi Leonard Returns to Toronto in Blockbuster Raptors-Clippers Trade

Toronto Raptors made a significant trade on Tuesday, securing the return of Kawhi Leonard, a franchise legend. The Raptors parted ways with Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, second-round picks in 2030 and 2033, and a 2027 first-round swap to acquire the star. Despite Leonard being 35 years old, Toronto believes his presence is invaluable.

Initially, Leonard expressed a desire to continue with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, the team hesitated to offer a long-term commitment, with Leonard’s current contract expiring; he’s set to earn $50.3 million in the upcoming season. The Raptors have immediately addressed this by preparing a two-year extension for Leonard, ensuring his stay through the 2028-29 season.

“It’s surprising that Kawhi wants to be in Toronto again, given his departure seven years ago,” reports noted.

During his previous stint, Leonard left a lasting legacy with memorable performances, particularly his famous buzzer-beater in the 2019 Eastern Conference semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.7 steals that postseason, leading the Raptors to their first NBA Championship and winning the Finals MVP. Leonard joined an elite group of players who’ve won Finals MVP with different teams, following his previous win with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014.

Leonard’s return offers an opportunity to blend his experience with promising talents like Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett. Barrett, noted for his stellar playoff performance last season, averaged 24.1 points per game. Other crucial players include rookie Collin Murray Boyles, sharpshooter Ja’Kobe Walter, and defensive expert Jamal Shead. The inclusion of Leonard elevates the Raptors to contenders in the Eastern Conference.

Adding excitement to this narrative is the prospect of Kyle Lowry’s return. Lowry, a beloved Raptor, revealed plans to sign a one-day contract to retire in Toronto, although his future remains undecided. After playing limited games with the 76ers, speculation surrounds whether he will retire or extend his career. If Lowry opts to sign a veteran minimum contract to reunite with Leonard and the Raptors, he would provide invaluable veteran leadership familiar with the team and its championship culture.
