Basketball fans have witnessed a significant roster shake-up. Kelsey Plum, a distinguished five-time All-Star guard, departs from the Los Angeles Sparks to join the Phoenix Mercury. This major trade involved the exchange of Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round draft pick, and a 2028 second-round pick.
The trade unfolded late Saturday, mere hours before the WNBA trade deadline on Sunday afternoon. Plum was the standout name available in the market, and she now joins a Mercury team eager for another shot at the postseason.
Plum, a seasoned WNBA champion, has been sidelined since June 21 owing to a lower left leg injury. There were expectations for her to return on Sunday against the Portland Fire, albeit with limited playtime. However, her availability for Monday’s face-off with the Chicago Sky remains uncertain.
The 31-year-old was showcasing a remarkable season before her injury with averages of 23.9 points and 6.4 assists per game, both being career highs. Earlier in the season, she led the league in scoring.
Her tenure with the Sparks was a brief experience, stretching just a season and a half. Plum was initially acquired ahead of the 2025 season in exchange for the No. 2 overall pick. This acquisition was part of a strategic attempt by the Sparks to expedite a rebuilding phase centered on players like Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson.
The trade did not translate into the swift turnaround Los Angeles hoped for. The Sparks missed the playoffs in 2025 and find themselves with a 10-17 record after losing the last six games. The team has struggled, going 2-9 during Plum’s absence, and faces the risk of a sixth consecutive postseason miss.
In July, Los Angeles also relieved general manager Raegan Pebley of duties, leaving interim decisions to assistant general managers Zach Knowlton and Nate Nielsen.
Plum was nearing free agency at season’s end and reportedly had no intention of renewing her contract with the Sparks. Her situation made her the prominent trade target as the deadline loomed. Interest from the New York Liberty and Atlanta Dream was confirmed.
Despite the challenges, Plum joins a Phoenix team that remains steadfast in pursuing playoff aspirations. The Mercury currently hold an 11-19 record, trailing the eighth-place Liberty by six games for a postseason berth.
Plum is expected to immediately contribute as a proven scorer and playmaker. Her presence will likely ease the offensive responsibilities on Alyssa Thomas, currently leading the Mercury with an average of 8.3 assists per game.
This trade marks the fourth instance in WNBA history where an All-Star was traded mid-season. Basketball enthusiasts will need to watch closely how this move impacts the Mercury’s ambitions.
