Multiple injuries were reported after a Kenmore Air floatplane made an emergency landing near Washington’s coast on Thursday. The aircraft caught fire after landing, prompting a large-scale rescue effort.
Incident Details
The U.S. Coast Guard received a report at approximately 5:25 p.m. local time about the emergency landing in North Beach Shallow Bay off Sucia Island. The Kenmore Air seaplane, carrying ten passengers and a pilot, landed there before it burst into flames.
Injuries and Rescue Operation
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office reported that passengers suffered various injuries, including head trauma, broken bones, and lacerations. Four passengers required transportation to local hospitals, with one person in critical condition. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported immediately.
“We are grateful that everyone aboard has been accounted for, and our immediate focus is ensuring our passengers and pilot receive the care and support they need,” said Kenmore Air CEO David Gudgel.

Aircraft and Flight Information
The aircraft involved was a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter. The flight departed from Seattle’s Lake Union, destined for Roche Harbor Marina on San Juan Island. The route is routine for Kenmore Air.
Rescue and Response
Several agencies, including the U.S. Navy, responded by deploying boats and emergency personnel. Three air ambulance helicopters were mobilized to transport injured passengers. Local fire and rescue teams, including Orcas Island Fire & Rescue, Lopez Island Fire & Rescue, and San Juan Island Fire & Rescue, also contributed.
