Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear addressed his record on transgender issues during a CNN’s State of the Union interview. Beshear emphasized his party’s commitment to empathy and fairness, responding to scrutiny over his decision to veto a bill that aimed to bar transgender students from participating in girls’ and women’s sports.
Beshear’s veto, which he explained by highlighting existing Kentucky High School Athletic Association rules, was overturned by the Republican-controlled legislature. He referenced a single transgender athlete in Kentucky while defending his broader viewpoint on the matter.
“We don’t throw anybody under the bus,” Beshear stated, underlining the party’s values of compassion and resistance to governmental control over sports.
His stance faced criticism from RNC National Press Secretary Natalie Baldassarre, who accused Beshear of prioritizing transgender policies over the safety and fairness for female athletes. She argued that Democrats fail to define what a woman is and criticized Beshear’s policy decisions as detrimental to women’s sports.
Beshear explained that fairness in sports competition was a key consideration but stood by measures aimed at supporting transgender Americans. He noted that existing rules already addressed competitive fairness without further legislative intervention.
The 2022 legislation known as the “Save Women’s Sports Act” restricted male students from participating in girls’ and women’s athletic teams. Beshear’s veto indicated his view that the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s regulations were adequate.
Regarding Senate Bill 150, which included healthcare and school facility regulations for transgender minors, Beshear again faced an overridden veto in 2023. He defended his position based on concerns over parental rights and mental health, rather than the legislation’s specific focus on restricting medical treatments for minors.
Efforts to contact Beshear for further comments have been unsuccessful.
