Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, has asked Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, to demonstrate his capability to continue serving in the Senate or to resign. This request follows McConnell’s recent hospital discharge after an extended hospital stay.
In a letter addressed to McConnell, Governor Beshear emphasized the importance of McConnell directly addressing the citizens of Kentucky regarding his condition. Beshear stated, “I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.”

The call for proof of fitness comes after an announcement from McConnell’s office that he had been discharged from the hospital but had not been cleared to leave the rehabilitation facility, where he continues to undergo physical therapy. Despite this, he will miss significant events, including a major political gathering in Kentucky and upcoming Senate votes.
McConnell issued a statement acknowledging his efforts to return to his Senate duties, explaining, “I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders. Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky, this Saturday.”
The senator was hospitalized on June 14 following a fall at his home, and his ongoing rehabilitation is influenced by a previous bout with childhood polio, which affects his mobility.
Governor Beshear had previously encouraged McConnell to disclose more information about his health due to a lack of public statements. Alongside this, Beshear addressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune, urging him to investigate McConnell’s capability if further proof isn’t provided.
Beshear’s communication with Thune expressed that clearer transparency could have avoided speculation, stating, “All of this speculation and even this letter could have been avoided with a minimal amount of transparency.”
In recent months, McConnell’s office released significant updates on July 12 and July 27, accompanied by photographs. Recent years have seen increased scrutiny of aging officials due to concerns about mental acuity and health.
