Keri Russell recently shared insights into her relationship with longtime partner Matthew Rhys during an appearance on the “Dear Chelsea” podcast. Russell, 50, reminisced about the early stages of their romance while filming “The Americans.” She described the initial days as filled with excitement, saying, “We were falling in love and staying up all night.” The couple engaged in their relationship amidst the high-pressure environment of filming, with Russell adding, “We were like wearing disguises, having fun, sneaking around, and it was so good.”
The two actors first met in 2012 when they started filming “The Americans,” and their relationship became public in 2014, following dating rumors the previous year. Russell shared some candid anecdotes about their time together.
Russell and Rhys have a son, Sam, born in May 2016. Russell also has two children from her previous marriage. Despite their long-term relationship, Russell expressed no urgency to marry Rhys. She told the podcast host, Chelsea Handler, that marriage feels unnecessary to her, stating, “I don’t need my last name to change, and I’m okay with things as they are.”
Russell explained that sharing a child equates to a lifelong bond, making marriage seem outdated. She emphasized her contentment with their current life.
Currently, Russell is promoting the fourth season of her Netflix show, “The Diplomat.” She plays Kate Wyler, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. Russell discussed her enjoyment in portraying such a complex character, highlighting Wyler’s intelligence, humor, and occasional blunders. She remarked, “I love her frankness and how she gets into hot water.”
Host Chelsea Handler, noting that Rhys forgot to thank Russell during his Emmy speeches, suggested a playful payback. Russell clarified that she reassured Rhys he didn’t need to mention her, explaining, “I know you love me. Thank whoever you want.”
