In a recent interview with Jesse Watters, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy expressed concerns over perceived patriotism levels among Democrats. McCarthy compared the enthusiasm shown by foreign World Cup fans visiting the U.S. with what he sees as a lack of national pride among some American Democrats.
McCarthy questioned why certain Americans seem to ‘hate’ or ‘root for us to lose.’ He highlighted a scenario involving a hypothetical World Cup match between the United States and Iran to illustrate his point. McCarthy asked where U.S. Senator Mark Kelly (D-Az) stands in showing national pride.
Senator Mark Kelly gained attention for his apparent allegiance to Team Mexico during the World Cup. On social media, Kelly proudly shared images of himself wearing a Team Mexico jersey. He expressed excitement as Mexico played against England, noting the vibrant atmosphere in Tucson during the match.
In contrast, Kelly has scarcely mentioned the U.S. men’s soccer team on his social media platforms. He has not attended a Team USA watch party or worn a Team USA jersey in public, at least based on his social media updates. This behavior contrasts with his enthusiastic support for Team Mexico, evidenced by his presence at a watch party where England defeated Mexico 3-2.
Critics point out that Kelly’s social media shows his non-interest in soccer, revealed in a tweet where he stated he watches other sports but never took to soccer. Despite this, he expressed a desire to watch the U.S. men’s team compete against Turkey, albeit without strong confidence.
This episode raises questions about where loyalties lie when it comes to national pride, as Kelly appeared more enthusiastic about Mexico’s match while previously showing limited interest in soccer.
