Kim Kardashian has revealed a new health condition that resonates deeply with her family’s history. In a recent trailer for “The Kardashians,” the 45-year-old shared that she has been diagnosed with esophagitis, which is inflammation of the esophagus.
This diagnosis holds particular meaning for Kardashian as her father, Robert Kardashian Sr., passed away from esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59. The revelation occurs in the series as Kardashian is shown on a hospital bed when an off-camera voice inquires if her father died from the same condition. Her mother, Kris Jenner, becomes visibly emotional at the suggestion, expressing, “I can’t. It makes me want to cry.” However, experts clarify that esophagitis and esophageal cancer are not identical conditions.
Esophagitis is the inflammation of the esophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. Common causes include acid reflux, certain medications, infections, or allergies, as noted by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). While esophagitis itself does not cause cancer, chronic inflammation might lead to Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous state that can elevate the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma.
Esophageal cancer involves the formation of malignant cells in the esophagus’s lining. The National Cancer Institute identifies two primary types: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Consistent acid reflux, or GERD, is a significant risk factor, and around 5% to 15% of those with GERD may develop Barrett’s esophagus. Despite this, many with Barrett’s esophagus do not progress to esophageal cancer.
For managing esophagitis and reducing future cancer risks, the Mayo Clinic advises:
- If GERD is the cause, adhere to prescribed acid-reducing medications.
- Avoid foods and drinks that aggravate reflux, such as alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and mint.
- Stay upright for at least three hours after eating, especially if reflux occurs at night.
- Lose excess weight and quit smoking to promote healing and reduce reflux.
- Consult a gastroenterologist if symptoms persist or complications arise.
Kardashian faced another health scare, revealing in 2025 that doctors discovered an unruptured brain aneurysm during an MRI. During “The Kardashians,” she mentioned that it “had been there for years.”
