The White House announced on Tuesday that U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle’s resignation was requested. This decision followed accusations of improper conduct that included accepting gifts and offering influence for financial payment. Soon after, Guilfoyle resigned, promising to ‘vigorously defend’ her reputation.
The Trump administration requested the resignation after severe criticism over her alleged conduct. The White House press secretary, Katie Zacharia, remarked on Guilfoyle’s positive contributions, but noted the need for this action due to concerns over reports. President Trump also expressed displeasure, stating he never spoke with Guilfoyle but confirmed her departure.
Guilfoyle faced allegations from stories reported by The Wall Street Journal. Accusations cited threats to an official, improper gift acceptance, and offering influence for debt payment. In her resignation, she denied these claims, discussing her commitment to public service and justice. Her lawyers argued that any financial requests were for unpaid work prior to her ambassadorship.
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, initially supported Guilfoyle but later declined to comment on the ongoing allegations. The State Department’s inspector general has been examining the claims, though no official probe has yet been confirmed.
Before her resignation, Greek opposition parties had called for a response from Guilfoyle. Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis argued that formal summons were unnecessary.
As ambassador, Guilfoyle emphasized energy issues due to Greece’s strategic position. Her close ties with energy sector executives contributed to the allegations against her.
Democratic leaders, including Rep. Gregory Meeks, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, and Rep. Robert Garcia, have called for an investigation. Reports claimed Guilfoyle promoted business interests and promised access to administration officials in return for financial favors.
Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former media host and California prosecutor, was previously married to Democrat Gavin Newsom. She was later engaged to Donald Trump Jr., adding complexity to her political and personal affiliations.
