On Tuesday night, late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon both took aim at President Donald Trump’s recent efforts to update the Lincoln Memorial Pool. The project involved a $14 million refurbishment intended to give the historic pool an “American flag blue” finish. However, due to algal blooms, the pool’s water has turned green.
The National Park Service and contractors have been working to address the issue. On Tuesday, they used hydrogen peroxide as part of their ongoing efforts to tackle the algae problem. This project is a component of Trump’s plans for a beautification project in Washington, D.C., aimed at preparing the city for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
Kimmel commented on the situation during his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, stating, “The pool is now ‘Mexican flag green.'” He shared footage with his audience, noting, “Trump reportedly spent $14 million updating the reflecting pool on the National Mall. He aimed to resurface and repaint it because he disliked how it looked. He wanted an ‘American flag blue’ color. The project was completed last week, but now it’s already completely green.”
Fallon, hosting The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, also highlighted the issue. He humorously quipped, “President Trump just finished his $14 million project on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool,” prompting boos from his audience. Fallon’s joke followed with, “He was trying to make the water American flag blue. But due to algae growth, it’s now a bright green,” and added, “Trump was going for Avatar and he ended up with Shrek.”
