Knicks Watch Party Canceled Amid Dispute Between Owner and Mayor

Just hours before the start of Game 4 in the N.B.A. finals, tensions flared as a disagreement between the New York Knicks owner, James Dolan, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani led to the cancellation of a watch party outside Madison Square Garden. The Knicks were set to face the San Antonio Spurs in a game that has stirred significant excitement among fans.

In a public statement on the platform X, Mayor Mamdani accused Dolan of making the decision to cancel the event, a move he termed as heartbreaking for the city’s enthusiastic Knicks fans. This marks yet another instance of high emotions amid the team’s path through the playoffs, an event awaited eagerly by fans hopeful for a championship win after more than five decades.

Responding to the situation during a radio interview on “The Craig Carton Show,” Dolan pointed the finger back at Mamdani and Jessica S. Tisch, the police commissioner, blaming them for ramped-up security around the arena. Dolan criticized the duo, claiming they lacked experience and were seeking to disrupt the celebratory mood of Knicks supporters.

“This is about celebrating the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, at the Mecca of basketball,” said Dolan. “This is what the mayor’s office and the commissioner’s office are trying to kill. They don’t want the celebration.”

A spokesperson from the Police Department mentioned earlier that day that they were prepared for the watch party, and the city had already approved the necessary permit for the event to proceed.

This incident remains in development. Further updates are anticipated as new details emerge.
