Knicks Win Spurs Baby-Name Trend: Jalen Set to Rise

With the recent N.B.A. championship win by the Knicks, experts predict a surge in baby names inspired by the team. Jalen Brunson, the team’s captain who led them to victory, stands out as a popular choice for new parents. According to baby-naming consultants, this trend is likely to echo the influence that names like Michael Jordan have had in the past.

Jalen, the name of the Knicks’ star player, already enjoys substantial popularity. It ranks among the top 1,000 boy names in the United States. As a result of Brunson’s leadership and the Knicks’ success, Jalen may see an even greater uptick. Other Knicks players’ names like Joshua, Miles, Tyler, and Landry are also on the rise, according to the Social Security Administration.

Pamela Redmond, the chief executive of Nameberry, a well-known baby-naming website, suggests that the team’s achievements and the players’ appeal are contributing factors. She noted, “People are galvanized by the sense of community, an increasingly rare but important sentiment.”

Brunson was not only the team captain but also took home the finals MVP. Ms. Redmond highlights the possibility of his first and last names gaining traction as choices for babies. In 2025, nine baby boys received the name Brunson, a number expected to grow.

The NYC Health Department anticipated an increase in babies named Jalen, with five receiving it since March 1. Ms. Redmond also speculates that girls might soon carry the name or variations of it, though she humorously hopes against names like “Brunsina.”
