Kyler Murray’s debut with the Minnesota Vikings faced a setback on Sunday due to a concussion suffered early in the game against the Green Bay Packers. The injury occurred during the third offensive drive, following aggressive tackles from two Packers players. As Murray entered concussion protocol, the team’s main concern was his availability for future games.
Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell updated on Monday that Murray was reported to be feeling well after the Vikings’ comeback win against the Packers. O’Connell confirmed Murray’s place in the concussion protocol but mentioned that the quarterback is attending team meetings. The Vikings plan to assess his condition day by day, adhering to protocol requirements.
The uncertainty around Murray’s ability to play in the upcoming Week 2 game against the Chicago Bears remains. The Bears recently scored 59 points against the Carolina Panthers, adding to the stakes for Murray’s potential return.
Before leaving the game, Murray completed 3-of-5 passes for 18 yards and an interception—his first regular-season snap with the Vikings ending in a turnover due to a swift Packers blitz. After Murray’s exit, veteran quarterback Carson Wentz stepped in, demonstrating effectiveness by completing 12 of 19 passes, achieving 133 yards, and scoring three touchdowns, contributing to the Vikings’ 39-22 victory.
If Murray cannot pass the protocol in time for the Week 2 match, Wentz is likely to start. J.J. McCarthy, the Vikings’ 2024 first-round pick, is expected to back him up.
