On Monday, L.A. County sheriff’s deputies responded to a distressing incident in Lancaster, where they shot and killed a pit bull that was attacking a man. The emergency occurred on 20th Street West, and authorities received a 911 call about the attack at 9:53 a.m.
On arriving, deputies witnessed a pit bull aggressively attacking a man who was lying in the front yard of a home. The yard was fenced with a locked gate, and the victim appeared unresponsive. Attempts to halt the dog using verbal commands were unsuccessful. A deputy then fired at the dog, bringing the attack to an end. The animal was pronounced dead on scene.
The victim, transported to a nearby hospital, was reported to be in stable condition by Monday evening. Investigations revealed that the pit bull belonged to a family member living with the victim. The cause of the attack remains under investigation. L.A. County Animal Control collected the deceased dog.
Lancaster Station Capt. Paul Bartlett commended the quick action of the deputies. “When our deputies arrived, they encountered a life-threatening emergency and acted without hesitation to save a man’s life,” Bartlett stated. “After stopping the attack, they provided lifesaving medical care until firefighters arrived.”
This incident recalls a similar case last July in Lancaster, where a man was fatally attacked by two pit bulls. In that event, deputies shot one of the dogs to enable paramedics to reach the victim, though the man later died in the hospital.
