Strong Start for Freshman Addy Mikolanis
Freshman pitcher Addy Mikolanis of Lake Central made an impressive entrance in varsity softball, featuring in two games against Crown Point this season. These include her appearance in the Class 4A Lake Central Sectional championship match. Mikolanis expressed satisfaction with the competitive environment, stating, “It felt really nice just to be in that environment. Just being there just felt really good. The defense had my back the whole time.” Her confidence was reflected in her team’s support.
Mikolanis excelled in her role, pitching five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and one walk while securing two strikeouts, leading her team to a 3-1 victory against Crown Point. Lake Central’s team stands with a 27-2 record and ranks No. 1 in the state coaches’ poll. They face Hobart in an upcoming regional match.
Consistency Against Crown Point
The Indians have consistently outperformed Crown Point, winning two regular season games against them. Despite last season’s sectional final upset, Coach Yvette Tovar showed trust in Mikolanis and the rest of her team. Mikolanis previously demonstrated her skills in a match against Crown Point where she pitched four innings of two-hit performance.
Tovar described Mikolanis as a “dark horse” due to her JV experience and standout performances, asserting her trust in Mikolanis during crucial game moments: “When I was talking to one of the coaches who was watching the pitchers, I was just like, ‘Hey, who’s ready? Who feels good?’ And even when I was talking to the pitchers, I was kind of trying to get a vibe from them, and when I talked to her, she was like, ‘Yeah, let’s go.’ She’s bought in. No fear.”
Key Performances from Lake Central Players
Senior third baseman Tegan Tripp, committed to Virginia Tech, supported Mikolanis, acknowledging her potential despite initial nerves. Tripp highlighted Mikolanis’s ability to generate ground balls conducive for defensive plays. “She knew she could do it,” Tripp said. “She didn’t have many strikeouts, but she was giving her infield ground balls that we could field and get outs for her.”
Freshman Colbie Tressel opened the championship match, allowing one run over two innings before Mikolanis took charge. Tressel appreciated the opportunity and confidence shown by Coach Tovar, stating, “I was nervous, but it also felt great knowing that my coach trusted me in the moment.” Tovar praised Tressel’s prior experience in high-profile games, underscoring the collective team effort.
Team Dynamics and Leadership
Junior pitcher Maddie Such, committed to Kentucky, assumed a leadership role among the pitchers, providing guidance and support. Such was on standby during the game but emphasized teamwork, assuring Tovar of her readiness, “I got you, coach. I’m here.” Such’s encouragement fostered confidence among younger players.
Tovar reflected on the team’s strength and cohesion, attributing their success to experienced players like Such mentoring the freshmen, “She’s had the world on her shoulders, getting the help she hadn’t had in two years. That’s given confidence to the younger girls to step in at any pressure situation.” This collaboration allowed Lake Central to leverage their strengths strategically.
