LeBron James announced via social media that he will join the Philadelphia 76ers for his 24th NBA season. This move positions the Sixers as a formidable team in the Eastern Conference. The city, already thriving with the playoff appearances of teams like the 76ers, Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies, now sees an additional boost.
James, formerly of the Los Angeles Lakers, made the announcement last Friday. His decision was a surprise to many of his new teammates who expressed their excitement openly. Among those enthusiastic about James’ arrival is Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.
At 41, James reportedly secured a two-year, $8 million contract with the 76ers, according to ESPN. In his announcement, James mentioned he considered ending his career last season, yet he realized he still had passion for the game.
James’ addition follows the acquisition of Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics. Brown’s trade was a significant move for the 76ers earlier this off-season. Last year, the 76ers were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. With the new additions of James and Brown, they aim to contend more seriously for a championship.
While not at the peak of his abilities, James remains effective. In his last season with the Lakers, he played 60 games, averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game. His performance earned him his 22nd All-Star selection, extending his NBA record.
