Legal Transparency Sought by ‘Egg Juror’ in Alex Murdaugh Case

A former juror from Alex Murdaugh’s high-profile double-murder trial is pressing for the release of sealed records concerning allegations of jury tampering during the proceedings. Myra Crosby, known as the ‘egg juror’, has filed a motion urging South Carolina authorities to publish investigative files related to a court official’s alleged misconduct.

Legal Motion for Transparency

Myra Crosby was forced to leave the jury before deliberations began. Her legal motion, dated May 18, requests the South Carolina Supreme Court to revoke protective orders that cover records linked to ex-Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca ‘Becky’ Hill. According to the filing, the importance of public interest and justice demands openness.

During a plea hearing, 11th Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard disclosed that investigators lacked adequate evidence to prosecute Hill on jury tampering charges. Hubbard admitted in a transcript attached to the motion, ‘I don’t know that I have enough based on what we have to even get an indictment.’

The ‘Egg Juror’ Incident

Crosby’s nickname originated from a humorous incident in court where she requested her dozen eggs and purse after her dismissal. This moment was met with laughter in the courtroom.

Investigation Records Push

Joseph McCullough, Crosby’s attorney, stated that his client has pursued multiple South Carolina Freedom of Information Act requests targeting the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the attorney general’s office, and the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. These requests aim to obtain the complete investigation file on Hill’s alleged jury influence during Murdaugh’s trial.

Crosby’s motion challenges the Supreme Court’s protective order, arguing that the investigations have concluded and the reasons for secrecy no longer apply.

Defense Efforts to Access Records

Meanwhile, Murdaugh’s legal team is also aiming to access these sealed files for use in civil litigation against Hill. Attorney Dick Harpootlian revealed that Murdaugh’s lawyers submitted a similar motion to subpoena the files, emphasizing that their request involves active legal proceedings.

Unlike Crosby’s request, which is based on an FOIL application without pending litigation, Murdaugh’s legal motion reflects their ongoing civil lawsuit against Hill.

Broader Allegations and Downfall

Murdaugh’s defense has suggested that Crosby’s removal was part of a larger strategy by Hill to compel a guilty verdict from jurors. Crosby gained attention nationwide after her peculiar exit related to the eggs incident.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson’s comments were sought by Fox News Digital, adding another layer to the ongoing narrative of Murdaugh’s notable legal decline.
