Nick Farmakis and his teammates on Libertyville’s baseball team have demonstrated impressive success both on the field and academically in recent years. After achieving consecutive Class 4A state championships, the Wildcats showcased another triumph: their academic excellence.
The American Baseball Coaches Association recently recognized Libertyville as one of 20 high schools in Illinois, and the sole representative from Lake County, to earn the Team Academic Excellence Award. Farmakis highlighted the overlap between the skills needed for both academics and baseball, including discipline, accountability, and time management.
The award requires teams to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Libertyville coach Matt Thompson noted the importance of academics for the team, which keeps academic struggles minimal.
Farmakis, who plans to study pre-business at Indiana, managed to pass multiple Advanced Placement exams, securing 15 credit hours for college. “Having these credits lets me explore and take classes I might not have otherwise,” he explained.
During the spring, when AP exams took place, the team adjusted its activities to support players needing study time. This required balancing team priorities with academic commitments, especially as the school year concluded.
Farmakis demonstrated adeptness in time management, balancing football, basketball, and baseball throughout his high school career. He prioritized schoolwork and used resources like study halls effectively.
On the baseball field, although Farmakis was not a starter, his role as a reliable late-inning defensive substitute and pinch runner was crucial. While he had limited plate appearances, he managed to score 24 runs and successfully stole nine bases in 10 attempts.
Thompson praised Farmakis for embracing his role and contributing to the team’s success. Farmakis kept an analytical approach, observing pitchers and noting tendencies to gain an edge as a base runner.
In the 2025 season, Farmakis was promoted to varsity just in time for the playoffs. His crucial run in the Wildcats’ 1-0 victory over Prospect emphasized his knack for seizing opportunities.
Farmakis, reflecting on a memorable play, shared, “Getting hit in the head was probably the best outcome I’ve had.” This clever use of strategy and awareness was a consistent trait for him.
