Lincoln Riley’s journey as head coach of the USC Trojans has faced challenges. When Riley took charge before the 2022 season, expectations were high. His successful record with the Oklahoma Sooners included a 55-10 overall record and 33-7 in conference play. He guided the team to four New Year’s Six games and achieved 12 wins in three consecutive seasons.
In 2022, the Trojans almost reached the playoffs, missing out due to a Caleb Williams injury in the Pac-12 Championship Game. However, since then, they have struggled to secure a spot in the expanded field. Now in 2026, it’s a crucial season for Riley.
The USC athletic department is aligned under general manager Chad Bowden. Their NIL program has attracted the top recruiting class in the country. Yet, the upcoming schedule is demanding, and patience among stakeholders is dwindling.
Despite these challenges, Riley remains confident. Speaking at the Big Ten meetings, he expressed optimism. “In May, there’s a tangible difference. It’s not just hope,” he stated. “The program has advanced not only in acquiring talented players but also in teaching the team to win.”
Riley emphasized his personal growth, saying, “I’m a much better coach now than during my Oklahoma years. I’ve learned valuable lessons that I wish I knew back then.” Although he averaged around 11 wins per year at Oklahoma, he has yet to replicate that success at USC. Still, he believes the team is “close” to reaching the playoffs.
“We were very close last year,” Riley noted. “Literally snaps away from being right in it. We’ve taken necessary steps, and now it’s time to execute.” He mentioned criticism for stating they opened a window of opportunity but maintained it reflects his belief in the program’s readiness.
During a 2025 game, USC led the Illinois Fighting Illini late in the fourth quarter but could not secure the win. Missed opportunities against Notre Dame also hindered their progress. Elite teams often capitalize on such moments, and USC has struggled in these crucial situations. The team was also outperformed by the Oregon Ducks in key aspects of the game.
Fans have voiced concerns about Riley’s decisions, such as a risky trick play against Notre Dame that resulted in a costly fumble when trailing late in the game.
This season, even without facing Notre Dame, USC faces a tough schedule. They play Indiana and Penn State away, and host Ohio State, Oregon, and Washington. They also have a rivalry game against UCLA’s new coach, along with challenging road trips like the one to Wisconsin.
A nine-win season might be seen as ‘successful,’ but Riley needs to aim for at least ten wins and a playoff spot to quell growing doubts about his leadership. The pressure is rising, and the coach needs to deliver results quickly.
