Jackson Mansker of Lincoln-Way West was nearly denied a home run by an impressive catch, remarkable enough to captivate even seasoned players. Known for his calm demeanor, Mansker showed frustration by punching the bench, leading to bloodied knuckles. He mentioned, “I’ve been hitting wall balls all season, which is quite frustrating.”
Later, that frustration fueled a two-run homer in the fifth inning, allowing Lincoln-Way West to overcome the host Vikings with a final score of 6-2 in the Class 4A Homewood-Flossmoor Regional championship. Carson Paulas contributed significantly with two hits and two RBIs, leading Lincoln-Way West (26-9) to their sixth regional triumph, marking their fourth win in five years. Pitcher Owen Chudzinski achieved victory relief with three clean innings.
Senior catcher Owen Weber also played a pivotal role in stopping a rally. With the bases loaded, he managed to catch a bouncing pitch and execute an inning-ending pickoff to Mansker at third. “It was crucial to block the ball, but I seized the opportunity when the runner strayed off the base,” Weber said.
Jalen Webb, representing the seventh-seed H-F (21-16), managed two hits in the game. Junior center fielder Marcos Morales made the notable catch in the third inning that initially prevented Mansker’s home run. “I assumed it was a home run, but Morales surprised with an excellent catch,” commented Mansker.
Mansker’s performance throughout the game was notable. A double hit the wall, followed by the home run and an intentional walk during his four visits to the plate.
Mansker, who looks forward to playing football in Indianapolis, altered his batting stance after receiving advice from assistant coach Jeff Struebing. Despite initial reluctance during practice, lifting his left heel proved beneficial. Struebing noted, “He’s incredibly athletic, yet his swing needed improvement. This small adjustment to his stance helped.”
Paulas praised Mansker’s ability, stating, “When I’m on base, he often sends the ball through the gap, allowing me to score quickly. He’s a reliable teammate, both on and off the field.”
