Lisa Demuth Wins Minnesota Republican Primary for Governor

Minnesota state House Speaker Lisa Demuth has secured the Republican nomination for governor, according to projections by NBC News. She overcame Trump ally Mike Lindell in the primary, paving the way for a general election battle against Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar.

Demuth’s win came as a surprise, defeating Lindell, founder of MyPillow and known election conspiracy theorist. Despite leading in some public polls and receiving former President Donald Trump’s endorsement, Lindell faced challenges, including questions about his residency raised by the Minnesota Republican Party chairman. These issues impeded his campaign’s progress as the party sought a strong opponent to Klobuchar in the upcoming election.

A key moment in the campaign was during an event at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota on July 1, where Lindell’s legal troubles were noted. Since 2020, he has dealt with various legal challenges after supporting Trump’s disproven claims about the 2020 presidential election, in which Joe Biden triumphed.

At a recent Minnesota Farmfest forum, Klobuchar addressed three GOP candidates, accusing them of aligning too closely with Trump. Demuth, along with other Republicans, has criticized Democrats for two major fraud scandals related to Medicaid and pandemic aid. Allegations suggest that hundreds of millions allocated for welfare programs were improperly diverted.

Demuth specifically cited “incompetent Democrat control” as a factor in the fraud cases. She highlighted her work in establishing the Fraud Prevention Agency Oversight Committee in the state House. These issues have taken center stage in her campaign against Klobuchar.

Initially planning to seek a third term, Democratic Governor Tim Walz chose to step back from the election, referencing the fraud scandal criticisms. Meanwhile, Klobuchar has announced her gubernatorial run and is one of four senators pursuing a governorship this year.

Despite the political challenges, Republicans aim to capture the Governor’s Residence in November. However, the state leans towards the Democrats, evidenced by Vice President Kamala Harris winning Minnesota by about four percentage points in the last presidential election, where Walz was her running mate.
