Long-lasting and Powerful El Niño Predicted Through Spring 2027

El Niño has arrived and is escalating rapidly, with predictions indicating its presence will extend not only through the upcoming fall and winter but also into spring 2027. During a media briefing, Columbia University climate scientist Azhar Ehsan demonstrated a chart showing near-certain probabilities of El Niño persisting until spring, essentially at 100%. The NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center reinforces this forecast, confirming El Niño’s continued influence for approximately six more months.

Climate models show a series of three-month intervals illustrating El Niño’s sustained presence. It will not only last a significant period but also intensify, accelerating faster than any previously recorded El Niño. Forecasts predict it might reach ‘super’ strength by fall or winter.

According to Brian James, Nexstar’s chief meteorologist, El Niño is already affecting weather patterns. In the Pacific, it has intensified hurricane activity, while the Atlantic remains notably calm. As winter approaches, El Niño’s impact will differ across the northern and southern regions of the United States. Northern states will likely experience warmer, drier conditions, whereas southern states might see cooler, wetter weather.

James mentions occasional instances of colder air moving into the central U.S. and across the northern Plains, with at least some snowfall expected in the northern part of the country. Nevertheless, the overall pattern suggests reduced snowfall across these areas.

The apex strength of El Niño won’t persist indefinitely. The Climate Prediction Center anticipates a decline from ‘very strong’ to ‘strong’ levels by early spring, eventually reaching a ‘moderate’ status.
