The LSU Tigers have decided to step back from their controversial plan to add former NFL players to their roster. This decision follows intense scrutiny from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which went as far as to threaten LSU with expulsion from the conference.
A vote regarding LSU’s potential expulsion is scheduled for Thursday. However, it appears there is little interest in seeing LSU part ways with the SEC. LSU President Wade Rousse acknowledged that the concern over professionals returning to college football is now a non-issue.
Rival teams, especially Texas A&M, are relishing LSU’s current predicament. On “The Aggie Football Hour,” Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko assured fans that LSU’s standing in the SEC remains unchanged. He expressed confidence that LSU will continue to be part of the conference, particularly as they prepare for their upcoming match in Baton Rouge.
Elko seized the moment to make a humorous comparison, likening the SEC’s disciplinary measures to parenting an unruly child. This comment likely agitated some LSU fans but reflected the SEC’s firm stance.
The issue arose when LSU and Coach Lane Kiffin attempted to recruit professional football players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. They justified this move by pointing to recent court rulings offering an extra year of eligibility for players in the 2022 recruiting class. This defiance of conference rules led to widespread dissatisfaction among the league’s schools.
Coach Kiffin further stirred controversy by referencing the situation during a Saturday halftime interview. Boasting of his team’s performance with a sarcastic comment about having NFL players, he inadvertently fueled the ongoing debate.
The SEC’s hypothetical scenario of LSU losing its traditional rivalries seems to have been enough to prompt the Tigers to reconsider their stance, ensuring they remain part of college football’s historic conference.
