Patriots’ AJ Brown Faces Setback with Ankle Injury in Season Opener

After last season’s Super Bowl disappointment, the New England Patriots aim to recapture the championship title for the first time since Super Bowl LIII in 2019. However, a significant challenge has emerged in their quest, as new acquisition AJ Brown might miss substantial time this season.

Acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in a summer trade, wide receiver AJ Brown sustained an ankle injury during the season opener, a rematch of Super Bowl LX against the Seattle Seahawks. The incident occurred early in the second half when he was hurt after a pass aimed at him was deflected. Trainers and medical staff attended to him on the field for a considerable duration.

Although Brown managed to walk off the field, he did so with a discernible limp. The team has reported him as questionable to return, pending x-ray assessments to determine the injury’s severity.

Dr. Deepak Chona expressed on X, previously known as Twitter, that the Patriots are likely to keep Brown out for the remainder of the game due to the injury’s nature.

Dr. Chona highlighted what appeared to be a high ankle sprain, stating, “These injuries often cause performance declines if played through.” This type of injury is common in football and other sports, typically requiring several weeks for full recovery.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a high ankle sprain involves a tear or damage to the high ankle ligaments connecting the tibia to the fibula, causing pain and potentially impairing performance. In severe cases, it can hinder walking or activities like climbing stairs.

While a high ankle sprain can heal naturally in six to eight weeks, athletes might face a longer recovery timeline. Although surgery is not usually necessary, it may become required if the injury is severe.

The situation surrounding Brown’s injury remains uncertain, but Patriots fans are undoubtedly anxious. The star receiver’s track record of exceeding 1,000 receiving yards in six out of seven NFL seasons makes him a critical asset for quarterback Drake Maye and the team’s hopes for a successful playoff pursuit.
