The introduction of a nuclear microreactor project in Indiana marks a significant step in the U.S. nuclear power resurgence. This initiative reflects an effort to reshape the nation’s energy dynamics, impacting areas from Washington state to Texas.

Indiana’s Reactor Project

The Department of War recently announced plans to deploy the Navy’s advanced nuclear microreactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane, Indiana. The reactor is scheduled for deployment by September 2028. Its primary purpose is to provide reliable electricity for military installations, enhancing energy resilience and national security.

Under President Trump’s bold leadership, the Department of War is rapidly fielding next-generation energy solutions for our warfighters, said Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering.

This announcement is part of broader efforts to ensure that U.S. military installations remain operational without interruptions.

Nationwide Nuclear Developments

The Indiana project is among several nuclear reactor developments occurring across the United States. These projects include TerraPower Natrium in Wyoming, Kairos Hermes in Tennessee, and X-energy’s Xe-100 reactors in Washington state and Texas.

Additionally, strategic projects like the Palisades SMR in Michigan, KRONOS Micro Modular Reactor in Illinois, and initiatives at Idaho National Laboratory further highlight the advancement in nuclear technology. The Army’s Janus program also plans microreactor deployment at various military bases including Fort Hood, Fort Drum, and Fort Campbell.

While these projects represent publicly announced developments, not all have yet appeared on tracking platforms like the CSIS Advanced Nuclear Deployment Dashboard. Updates are anticipated as new projects emerge.

Reviving Nuclear Energy

After a period of stagnation, nuclear energy is experiencing renewed interest. Historical incidents, especially Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, contributed to previous public skepticism. However, current concerns about climate change, energy security, and electricity demand drive the nuclear resurgence.

Efforts to find carbon-free electricity sources have led to increased interest in nuclear plants, which offer constant power generation. Unlike solar and wind energy, nuclear energy remains unaffected by weather conditions. Rising electricity requirements and grid reliability concerns further propel advanced reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs).

President Donald Trump emphasized nuclear expansion through executive orders in May 2025. These orders are designed to hasten reactor construction, streamline licensing, promote domestic nuclear fuel production, and enhance U.S. nuclear capacity.

Military’s Role in Nuclear Expansion

The military recognizes nuclear power’s resilience potential. The planned reactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane intends to provide power independent of the commercial grid. The Janus program aims to strengthen military energy resilience by deploying microreactors at bases like Fort Bragg and Fort Drum.

Challenges and Public Perception

Nuclear projects face ongoing controversy. Opponents express concerns over radioactive waste management, accident risks, security threats, and high construction costs. Delays and cost overruns in nuclear projects are also frequent.

Supporters argue that advanced reactors and SMRs introduce new safety features, offering safer and potentially cost-effective alternatives to traditional plants. Public attitudes may be shifting. A June 2026 Echelon Insights survey found more respondents supporting nuclear power plant development in their communities than AI data centers.

The Path Forward

While the completion of all planned reactor projects remains uncertain, the current level of planning and construction highlights a significant reversal from previous downturns. Indiana’s announcement underscores nuclear energy’s growing role in U.S. power generation, industrial progress, and national security.
