The Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates faced off in a tense game where the White Sox found themselves in a crucial moment during the seventh inning. With bases loaded and one out, Miguel Vargas hit a ground ball to third base. The Pirates executed a double play, ending the inning. However, this play sparked a heated exchange between the teams.
Brandon Lowe, the Pirates’ second baseman, took issue with Sam Antonacci’s slide into second base. Words were exchanged, and the benches cleared. “Bases were loaded and went into the base pretty hard, just to try to make a harder throw for him to have to make,” Antonacci explained. According to him, the slide was legal and consistent with the rules, which allowed players to slide as long as they maintained contact with the base. “In a close game, especially during the playoffs, every run counts,” Antonacci added.
“I’m sure he’s a great guy but he had a few choice words to say,” Antonacci continued. “When you have a problem and you walk away like that, I’m happy enough to have a conversation but you can’t walk away. He’s a grown man.”
After order was restored, the game proceeded, but the White Sox couldn’t recover and lost 4-2 to the Pirates in front of 14,803 fans at Rate Field. Lowe commented, “I just didn’t like the slide and said my piece and walked away.” Lowe referred to previous slides by Antonacci that the Pirates found unacceptable.
Despite the heated exchange, Antonacci remained adamant that his slide was legitimate. He noted a difficulty with his sliding technique, particularly with his arm lifting as he goes in: “Your left arm wants to come up, whereas if you run down with your left leg, your right arm would want to come up.” He emphasized the importance of trying to score in close games.
In the aftermath, the Sox had opportunities to score but failed to capitalize. They ended the seventh inning with a double play and scored a run on an infield hit by Antonacci. Later in the game, Munetaka Murakami hit a solo home run, marking his 31st for the season. The Sox ended the night 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine on base and falling to another double play in the eighth inning.
Sox manager Will Venable acknowledged the challenge faced by his players against Pittsburgh’s bullpen. “The number of guys they used today (eight), they all did a really good job,” he commented. Despite the loss, the first-place Sox (75-69) remained two games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central.
Pitcher Davis Martin performed well, allowing one run over five innings. The Pirates added three more runs in the seventh inning against reliever Sean Newcomb. With tensions high from the previous plays, Antonacci’s slide remained a point of contention. “We’re trying to get a run in any way we can,” he said, defending his play.
In Antonacci’s view, his actions were not intended to incite the team but were part of playing the game hard. Venable acknowledged the Pirates’ effective pitching and credited both teams for their determination throughout the game.
