French President Emmanuel Macron visited a coordination center in southwest France on Monday, urging fire crews to remain strong as they battled a massive wildfire. He acknowledged that the fight will require time but promised, “We will win this battle together.” The blaze, burning since last week, has covered an area four times the size of Paris and forced 220,000 residents to evacuate.
Calling the situation unprecedented, Macron described it as France’s worst fire-related emergency since World War II. He commended the firefighting teams for halting the fire’s spread as it approached Bordeaux, known for its wine region. Despite this success, government officials warned that the threat persists, especially with ongoing heat waves turning forests into tinder.
With temperatures predicted to rise above 35°C (95°F) this week, thousands of firefighters and aircraft are racing to contain the blaze. The national weather service forecasts increased temperatures in southwest France from Tuesday.
The weeks ahead will be hard. We must hold firm,Macron stated.
Authorities in the region are also providing support for the vast number of evacuees, which include 250,000 people in southwestern areas. He spoke of displaced individuals traumatized by losing their homes. Although no new evacuations were announced Monday, officials discouraged travel to the region to prevent further disruption during the tourist season.
Efforts to fight the fire included crews using earth movers to clear barriers in the forest to stop the spread of flames, which had reached 15 kilometers from Bordeaux’s outskirts. Farmers aided efforts by supplying water to the firefighting teams.
Briefed by the Gironde region’s fire chief, Macron learned how crews battled the unpredictable blaze, which generated electrical storms causing additional flare-ups. Macron praised their achievements and acknowledged the complexity of the ongoing crisis.
Assistance from Other Countries
Around a dozen nations have provided aid to both France and Spain, where fires have also caused over 330,000 people to evacuate. In Spain, wildfires affected areas around Madrid and Valencia, displacing 79,000 people. Spain’s largest fire on record has scorched 500 square kilometers in Ávila, west of Madrid.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez highlighted that these fires are not isolated incidents but the result of a climate emergency increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires. Spain’s weather agency predicts temperatures above 40°C (104°F), further heightening fire risks.
Wildfire in Italy
In Italy’s Puglia region, a wildfire broke out near Peschici on Sunday, driven by strong winds. It led to the evacuation of around 300 tourists from beaches and campgrounds. Authorities used three Canadair water-dropping planes and ground crews to combat the blaze.
