Maine Democrats Brace for Battle as Troy Jackson Leads Charge

Democrats in Maine are relieved to have avoided a contentious fight in selecting their Senate nominee. The focus now shifts to the challenging task of unseating five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins. Former state Senate President Troy Jackson has secured a majority of delegate slots, leading his main rivals to withdraw and rally behind him. He is expected to receive the official nomination at the party convention.

Former Maine Democratic Party Chair Bev Uhlenhake described the party’s mood as one of ‘relief.’ Ethan Strimling, former Portland Mayor, stated, ‘It’s going to be a tough race.’ He emphasized the need for hard work, but he sees potential in Jackson. Defeating Collins, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, will be difficult due to her strong fundraising capabilities and the necessity for Democrats to make up for lost time.

Jackson’s appeal lies in his populist blue-collar background. Despite some concerns regarding his charisma, Democrats remain optimistic. Uhlenhake underlined that effective politicians need not have Platner’s charisma. Jackson’s authentic connection to voters is considered an advantage.

Jackson’s candidacy is not without scrutiny. He has faced allegations of having a fiery temperament, which his campaign partly acknowledged. Adviser BJ McCollister explained that Jackson’s passion was sometimes confused with intimidation, yet Jackson has apologized for heated disagreements.

The race is of utmost importance for Democrats seeking Senate control. Jackson has a crossover appeal that could draw support from Republicans and independents. In 2020, he outperformed Biden by 15 percentage points in his district. He won reelection with 59% of the vote, while Collins outperformed all when she won her race against Sara Gideon.

The outcome will hinge on voters who supported both Collins and Biden in past elections. Partisanship will primarily influence voter decisions, with the need to appeal to those who have previously split their tickets. Despite Collins’ long-standing political influence, the current political climate presents vulnerabilities, making the race a coin-flip according to analysts.
