Man’s Birthday Celebration Turns Into Fight for Survival After Allergic Reaction

A vacationing man experienced a shocking turn on his birthday when he faced a severe allergic reaction. Many Western countries report peanut allergies in 1-2% of the population according to a 2021 review in the journal Allergy. Symptoms range from mild reactions to severe cases like anaphylaxis, which can result in breathing difficulties or dangerously low blood pressure without swift treatment.

Planning and clear communication about allergens usually prevent severe reactions. However, Ellis Edwards learned that unexpected events can occur, even with precautions. While dining at a restaurant in Valletta, Malta, he faced unexpected challenges despite taking care to manage his life-threatening peanut allergy.

Whenever I eat out, I’m extremely careful and always make staff aware before ordering anything, Edwards told Newsweek.

On April 30, staff presented dessert options after dinner. Edwards emphasized his peanut allergy, opting for an Oreo dessert they assured contained only hazelnuts. After a few bites, Edwards felt tingling and swelling around his lips, and minor difficulty breathing. When another diner confirmed a peanut taste, two restaurant staff insisted the dessert contained no peanuts, reassuring Edwards it was safe.

Edwards paid and left, even though symptoms felt mild. He suspected minimal exposure or a different cause. Yet, 15 minutes later, his condition worsened significantly, with breathing difficulties and swelling, confirming a full anaphylactic reaction. He used his EpiPen at 12:50 a.m. to administer epinephrine, but symptoms didn’t improve. A second EpiPen also failed.

With an ambulance on the way, fear set in.

Those moments were terrifying because I knew I was running out of treatment options before the ambulance arrived, Edwards said. I genuinely believed I might not survive, and every minute waiting for the ambulance felt like a lifetime.

Upon arrival, paramedics provided additional epinephrine, oxygen, and nebulizer treatment. Edwards was hospitalized until May 2. He reflected on the seriousness of his reaction, saying, it was a life-threatening medical emergency.

His travel insurance covered medical expenses, yet the incident left him wary of restaurant allergen information. Edwards shared his experience on TikTok as a warning. He expressed the precarious trust placed in allergen information by those with food allergies.

One minute I was celebrating my birthday and enjoying my holiday, and less than an hour later I was in the back of an ambulance fighting for my life after repeatedly being reassured that the food I had been served was safe for me to eat, he said.

While Edwards recovered, his story is a reminder of the serious nature of food allergies and the potential fatal consequences of misinformation.
