Marist Volleyball Victory Led by Talented Lineup

A few times each week, Sommer Shaw from Marist and her mother, Sharon Wilson, spend quality time running together, often with their pit bull, Joe. Shaw uses these runs for extra training to enhance her stamina for long volleyball matches.

Shaw, a junior middle hitter, made significant contributions in Marist’s recent victory. She achieved five kills and recorded three block assists in the 25-13, 25-11 win against St. Laurence in Chicago. This marked a strong start for Marist in the GCAC Red conference.

Maggie Kurpeikis, committed to Michigan, led the team with 13 kills and six digs. Alongside her, Taylor Berg, heading to Western Michigan, added six kills and five digs. Maeve Gill contributed four kills. Haven Enselman managed 26 assists and six digs, while Ariella Link achieved 14 digs and four assists.

Marist remains undefeated with a record of 7-0, boasting an average winning margin of 12.6 points per game. No team has scored more than 18 points against the reigning Class 4A state champions.

“I’m glad we started strong,” Shaw said. “We’re coming on strong and fierce and want to win every match.”

St. Laurence’s Abby Ambrose led her team with four kills and two block assists. Clancey Bowen added three kills and two block assists. This match marked the first encounter between the two programs, attracting a large and enthusiastic crowd.

At 6 feet tall, Shaw is one of the fresh faces in the experienced Marist lineup. She’s settling in well. Her teammate Kurpeikis praised her, saying, “She’s quick, can move side to side well, and jumps really high to get on top of the ball.”

Coach Jordan Vidovic noted Shaw’s impressive jumping ability, saying, “She jumps sneaky high. She’s one of our highest touchers.” With time, Shaw is expected to enhance her performance even more.

The merger of the GCAC and East Suburban Catholic Conference resulted in 21 teams split into three divisions. The GCAC Red, home to Marist, includes competitive teams like Mother McAuley, Benet, and St. Laurence, among others. Marist faces a challenging schedule, including tournaments in Las Vegas and Fort Wayne, which will surely test Shaw’s endurance.

“We’re excited about playing the best teams,” Shaw noted.

Shaw, who began playing volleyball in eighth grade, has grown into a key player on a leading team. “Some friends suggested I try volleyball,” she said. “I attended camps, participated in small tournaments, and eventually joined my friends at 1st Alliance.” Her commitment to the sport has been rewarding.

Shaw treasures the volleyball environment and cherishes the uplifting support of her teammates. “I love the camaraderie. It motivates me to continue,” she expressed.
