U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee secured a decisive victory in the Republican primary, positioning herself as a leading candidate to replace Governor Bill Lee. Blackburn’s success in the primary suggests she is poised to become the state’s next governor. Tennessee has not elected a Democratic governor since 2006. Lee, who has occupied the governor’s office since 2019, is unable to run again due to term limits. In his last election, he won comfortably with 64.9% of the vote against Democratic opponent Jason Martin.
Although he did not endorse a candidate in the primary, Lee acknowledged his longstanding friendship with Blackburn. “I’ve been friends with Marsha for a long time, and she served as my congressman and representative in the General Assembly,” Lee stated. “I’m proud we have really good people running for governor in this state.”
Blackburn highlighted her commitment to Republican priorities, particularly immigration, promising to address issues like illegal immigration and drug trafficking. In a campaign video, she stated, “As governor, I’ll deport illegals, stop the flow of drugs and drug money. We will crack down on cartels, restrict cash transfers to drug havens and hit criminals and illegals where it hurts—in their wallets.”
She also vowed to prevent China from purchasing land in Tennessee, underscoring this with an advertisement demonstrating her stance.
President Donald Trump refrained from endorsing any candidate, having connections with one of Blackburn’s opponents, Rep. John Rose. Rose, an established farmer and founder of an IT certification company, has served in Tennessee’s legislature since 2019. His campaign focused on localized solutions, highlighting education, infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and economic development.
Another candidate, State Rep. Monty Fritts, supported a platform centered around reducing government involvement and increasing financial savings for citizens. Fritts advocated for a smaller state budget and more parental control in education.
However, Fritts faced backlash for controversial statements regarding Islam, which he did not view as a religion but as a political movement. This controversy arose when he called for a ban on mosques and other religious institutions.
With the primary behind her, Blackburn will compete in the general election on November 3 against Memphis City Councilwoman and Chief Public Defender Jerri Green.
