A man and woman from Maryland were arrested following the death of their 2-month-old daughter, who suffered from severe head injuries. According to charging documents and prosecutors, the father claimed the injuries were caused by “Satan slamming a door on the child.”
Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21, face charges of first and second-degree child abuse, first and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment related to the death of Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado. These charges carry a maximum potential sentence of 55 years in prison. Baltimore Police stated that additional homicide charges are possible, pending an autopsy report.
On a Wednesday, the infant was brought to Harbor Hospital, displaying severe bruising around her eyes and jawline, described by doctors as “suspicious.” A more thorough examination found “significant head and brain trauma” along with “multiple skull fractures,” injuries not identified in the initial check-up, according to reports from CBS Baltimore.
“The father claimed a supernatural force was responsible for the injuries,” police reported.
During a court hearing, the father reportedly told police that a supernatural force caused the harm. The mother suggested that their 2-year-old son jumping on the bed accidentally led to the baby falling to the floor. However, a prosecutor contended that the extent of the damage could not result from a single fall from the bed.
Police noted that the mother took the baby to the hospital because she was unresponsive. She initially reported that the infant became unresponsive while lying face down on the bed after feeding. Prosecutors said she described the child as “freezing and in shock” when brought to the hospital.
Medical professionals noted the baby endured “significant head and brain trauma,” including frontal lobe and subdural hemorrhaging. Unfortunately, resuscitation attempts failed, and the child died in the hospital.
Investigators revealed that both parents admitted seeing the bruises on September 6, followed by the child vomiting the next day but did not seek medical help until needed urgently. Prosecutors identified the couple as Guatemalan nationals and labeled them “an extreme flight risk.” They remain detained without bail.
