A Maryland sheriff has expressed concern over the state’s new sanctuary law, warning that it could lead to the release of dangerous individuals back into the community. Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler spoke to Fox News Digital, stating that this law may result in increased crime rates and additional victims.
Maryland’s Sanctuary Law Concerns
Sheriff Gahler’s statements come after he testified before a House Judiciary subcommittee regarding Maryland’s restrictions on cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Gahler, along with 16 other sheriffs from across the state, is part of a lawsuit challenging the Community Trust Act. His main fear is that the law will prevent the transfer of aliens deemed public safety or national security threats by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to federal custody.

Gahler emphasized that the law could require correctional officers to release detainees flagged by ICE rather than transferring them directly to immigration authorities. He believes this approach could lead to individuals committing crimes after release. Gahler is steadfast in holding elected officials accountable if released individuals go on to victimize others.

Tragic cases underscore Gahler’s concerns. For example, two residents in his county suffered at the hands of illegal immigrants. Rachel Morin, a mother of five, was brutally attacked on a local trail in August 2023. Additionally, Kayla Hamilton, a young woman with autism, was killed in her home in July 2022. Their killers were illegal immigrants.
Political and Safety Concerns
Gahler argues that supporters of Maryland’s immigration restrictions are prioritizing political motives over public safety. He insists that the Community Trust Act discourages effective communication and cooperation with federal entities, a lesson unheeded since 9/11. Gahler and other sheriffs argue that their previous system was secure, involved cooperation with ICE, and provided a safer way of managing jailed individuals.

Governor Wes Moore’s office asserts that Maryland remains committed to reducing crime and protecting citizens’ rights, despite signing the measure into law without his endorsement.
