Mason Auslander’s Impact on Highland Park Football

Highland Park junior Mason Auslander faced an uncertain beginning during his first varsity football camp this summer. Competing for a position at cornerback, Auslander understood the importance of reading opponent strategies and receiver patterns. Equally important was understanding the dynamics within his team. Auslander noted the challenge of facing older and bigger players, saying, “I had something to prove, and it became mainly about effort.” This dedication earned him a starting spot.

Despite securing his position initially, Auslander remained vigilant. “Going into Week 1, an away game against Leyden, I was thinking I just want to keep my spot for the first home game,” he remarked. Auslander knew he needed to perform consistently to maintain his role, especially with competition from teammates eager to seize the opportunity.

Auslander’s performance was pivotal in Highland Park’s triumph over Deerfield in the Central Suburban League Central matchup. During this 37-16 victory, Auslander achieved his third interception of the season. Highland Park coach Anthony Kopp praised Auslander, stating, “He had a really big summer, made some huge strides. He’s become a top defender.”

Auslander has played a crucial role in Highland Park’s defense this season. The team, currently at 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the league, demonstrated defensive prowess by limiting Deerfield to 45 yards in the first half and shutting out both Glenbrook North and Maine East in previous matches. Auslander identified tendencies in Deerfield’s quarterback, Cooper Crane, and receiver Colt Pontikes, leading to one of Highland Park’s three takeaways.

Recalling his play, Auslander explained, “My guy ran a go route, and I didn’t think the quarterback could throw it that far. I got to go get that thing. That’s my job.” His interception in a previous game against Evanston mirrored this determination.

Auslander’s confidence is matched by his drive to improve. “Fear was definitely a factor in the summer because there were about five cornerbacks trying for the position,” he said. His approach has translated into skilled coverage, with Highland Park senior receiver Max Stevens noting Auslander’s growth in technique and speed.

Auslander attributes some of his success to his older brother Spencer, who graduated in 2025 and played safety. “Growing up, older brother, little brother — he was going to beat up on me a little bit,” Auslander recalled. The rivalry spurred Auslander to refine his skills, highlighting Spencer’s influence in pushing him beyond personal limits.

Auslander’s journey reflects dedication and resilience. As Highland Park continues its season, Auslander’s contributions solidify his role as an essential member of the team.
