Matt Smith: From Time Lord to Villain

On a pleasant May morning in the garden of his London residence, Matt Smith welcomed visitors with grace. He offered tea, adjusted chairs to provide shade, and frequently interrupted himself to tend to his terrier, freshly back from the vet.

Smith, known for his roles in “Doctor Who” and “The Crown,” effortlessly charmed. Steven Moffat, who has known him for two decades, labeled this charm as ‘borderline ridiculous.’ Moffat noted, “Everyone that Matt ever talks to thinks that they are probably Matt’s best friend.”

Despite warnings about his gallantry, it proved irresistible. Initially gaining fame in 2010 as the 11th Doctor in “Doctor Who,” a part characterized by immense likability, Smith has since taken on roles portraying murderers and misanthropes. These characters often find themselves dominated by powerful partners.

“We need our villains,” stated Smith, who frequently assumes such roles. Yet, he noted, “It’s not like I only want to play that for the rest of my life.”

Smith leveraged his magnetic appeal, characterized by a wide grin and sweeping brown hair, to play complex roles. In the dark thriller “Lost River,” he performed a graphic scene involving blunt scissors, a role he described as “quite good fun.” When embodying these darker characters, Smith’s vibrant eyes narrow, his warmth fades, and no tea is offered.
